Started in 2005 Geen Naam a.k.a (G6) was proposed by Bobez (Guitar), Laney(Bass & Vocal) and EL(Drum). The band has remained inactive for 5 years because of personal reasons and other commitments. ok skrg ni mmg byk band dah salah tafsir "diy". kebanyakan band buat apape material secare diy tp resultnya, kaset atau cd yg xde sleeve, lyric kertas buku latihan fotostat. ape lancau? diy tu mmg minimal kan cost tp diy juga about creativity bkn diy sebab malas. creativity kite sendiri utk tunjuk pihak mainstream, kite boleh produce sumthing yg lebih murah tapi quality lebih hebat dari ape yg dorang produce.

genre Geen Naam plak gua tak tau nak ckp mcm mane. bagi gua dorang masih punk yg ganas seakan-akan hardcore punk & street punk tapi ade sedikit perisa power metal. so tak heran sgt kalau mamat metalhead pun boleh enjoy demo ni. mmg creative. music dorang sgt genius. gua dpt rase pembikinan music sebegini rupe mungkin makan masa berbulan-bulan atau bertahun. sape tau.

lyric pun best. 100% in english. bukan melodic pop/punk rock yang tak political. bkn hardcore yg nyanyi pasal unity & friendship tak habes-habes.

Well on a cold Tuesday morning, I was walking into town,
Had my headphones blaring, didn’t notice what was around,
I crossed the road, a car swerved and nearly ran me down,
Looked in the driver’s seat, I swear to God it was Doc Brown,
He said “Are you Michael J Fox?” I said “No I’m Jonny Fox”,
He said “Close enough, you best get inside,
I’m taking you with me to see another time,
A place you could only have dreamed in your mind,
An alternative reality situated just outside of Clapham,
So strap yourself in,
Cos where we’re going you don’t need roads,
To get to where punk never happened”

We landed in a concrete desert, rubble as far as the eye could see,
I says to Doc “Where we goin’?”
Doc says he’s following me,
We found the only building in the city that was left standing,
It was my local venue,
I know cos I recognised the landing,
And there’s a gig on tonight! This town ain’t so bad,
I got everything I need, right here in this pad,
So I pulled out a bottle and took a heroic swig,

Well an hour after doors and there was still no-one there,

They’re just watching the telly and then feeding their belly,
Their parents listen to The Beatles, while they listen to Nirvana,
Cos Green Day and The Pistols, well they never heard either,

They got long sleeve T-shirts and they never shower,
They still believe in flower power,
The hippy dream’s faded but they got nothing new,
So they wear flares and slippers and burn incense sticks too,
The kids would rather skate than go out and smash the state,
While their parents sit still and meditate,
Action’s at a low when people just don’t care,
They zoned out to their surroundings, the anger’s not there,

And I’m stuck in this hippy, grunge reality,
Where the buildings are crumbling down from apathy,
They grab you at school when you’ve just turned 13,
And show you your brand new, life long routine,
You can sleep and work, and work and sleep,
So you can save up the money to buy a new jeep,

I pulled a fanzine out my back pocket, held it in my hands,
And watched the colours slowly fade away,

Not even something weak like ‘The Best Punk Album In The World Ever Volume 1’,
Outside the windows, I saw the excavators coming to tear the place down,
No-one stopped them, for there is no community left in this town,
There’s no-one around to fight Margaret Thatcher,
The power of the flower just couldn’t match her,

Too strong was the will of Parliament to cause damage,
That with no punk rock everything went unchallenged,
Land got knocked down to build more land,
That got knocked down again for a couple more grand,
With no punk the protests were full of throwbacks calling each other comrade,
Of course the young folks’ attendance started to fade,
So it was easy for the police to move in, they were trusted,
And that’s when the whole damn town got busted,

They moved CCTV cameras in everywhere,
But the people were too apathetic to care,
They made them carry ID cards to state where they’re from,
As if by being born they had done something wrong,
They shipped all the poor folk to live out in the edges,
So the rich folk could move in and peer over their hedges,

lagu-lagu soundtrack kebanyakkan adalah dari Marjinal dan lagu tema? punk in love juga dari marjinal. lagu-lagu yang ada dalam tu, otot kawat, cinta pembodohan, i wanna be, partai, dan tak peduli. Ada jugak aku perasan line up Marjinal dalam cerita ni. haha.

Masalah sudah bermula dekat kaunter tiket.Sesudah aku sampai barisanya yang menunggu giliran amat panjang dan ada sesuatu yang amat celaka,harga tiket RM27,harga dah naik.Lepas itu ada satu pertelingkahan mulut antara seorang bro@orang lama scene dengan penjaga kaunter tiket, semuanya gara-gara tiket dikatakan sold out padahal tiket masih ada.Selepas dimaki dan di FUCK OFF bertubi-tubi akhirnya tiket dijual kembali.

Bermulanya KECELAKAAN RTW9 semasa nak masuk laluan security.Secara tiba-tiba security yang menjadi ANJING ORGANISER telah MERAMPAS TALI PINGGANG SPIKE AKU DAN RAMAI LAGI.Apa semua ini? bila aku tanya security gemuk itu@QUESTION AUTHORITY dia menjawab yang itu adalah arahan ORANG ATAS@FAT BOYS.Perkara ini menunjukkan betapa SISTEM KAPITALIS DAN AUTHORITY digunakan oleh ORGANISER.Di sebabkan itu,AKU TERPAKSA IKAT TALI KASUT DI PINGGANG SEBAB SELUAR AKU BETUL-BETUL LONGGAR.

Aku ada melihat segolongan BUDAK-BUDAK SKINHEAD YANG AKU TERUS TERANG MENGATAKAN MEREKA SEGOLONGAN POSER SKINHEAD.Muka-muka budak sekolah yang baru kenal skinhead.Aliran apa aku tak tahu mereka ini tetapi yang aku tahu mereka adalah ALIRAN POSER.Kerana tidak ada sebab budak SKINHEAD nak datang RTW9.Tiada satu pun band Oi/PUNK/STREET.Adakah budak-budak SKINHEAD INI DATANG NAK TENGOK BUNKFACE?BITTERSWEET? 1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread
domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

Saya Suhaib. Saya berusia 16 tahun. Ketika bapa saya, Mat Sah Satray ditahan di bawah ISA pada 18 April tahun 2002, saya berusia 8 tahun 5 bulan. Saya masih terlalu kecil dan tidak dapat mengingati semua peristiwa. Ketika itu saya sedang tidur, tetapi terjaga apabila beberapa orang polis masuk ke bilik tidur saya dan dengan kasar menyelak cadar, mengangkat hujung tilam, menarik rak baju, membuka serta menutup almari pakaian hingga mengeluarkan bunyi kuat yang membuatkan saya terjaga. Umi, panggilan saya pada emak, mendukung saya dan diletakkan di sebelah abah yang ketika itu duduk di sofa di ruang tamu. Aku menoleh ke arah Abah dan nampak kedua-dua tangannya bergari. Aku menangis kerana terlalu takut melihat gari itu. Gambaran gari yang melengkar di kedua-dua belah tangan Abah amat sukar untuk hilang dari minda saya......

Agak lama juga polis menggeledah rumah kami. Seorang wanita sibuk menyoal Abah dan Umi bergilir-gilir dan kemudian menulis sesuatu di atas kertas. Manakala lima orang lelaki yang lain, sibuk membuka rak buku Abah, mengeluarkan Quran dan buku-buku agama serta menyelak-nyelak setiap muka surat dengan pantas. Saya tidak tahu, apa yang mereka cari. Tidak lama selepas itu, mereka membawa Abah masuk ke dalam van putih. Umi dukung saya dan kami berdua sempat melambai tangan kepada Abah. Sebaik sahaja van putih hilang dari pandangan, aku menangis lagi sambil memanggil-manggil Abah. Saya baring di riba Umi hingga tertidur...
Saya bagaikan melalui satu mimpi buruk di mana Abah dilarikan dari rumah oleh sekumpulan lelaki. Bila terjaga dari tidur, saya mencari Abah di semua bilik termasuk bilik air tetapi tidak ditemui. Saya mendapatkan Umi yang sedang membancuh minuman untuk bertanya tentang Abah, tetapi saya nampak Umi juga sedang menangis....

Saya asyik teringatkan Abah. Dari pagi saya tunggu Abah, tengah hari, hinggalah cuaca gelap dan masuk waktu maghrib, Abah masih juga belum pulang. Saya mula menangis kerana rindukan Abah... Ketika itu telefon rumah berdering, saya dan Umi berlari ke arah telefon tetapi apabila gagang diangkat, tiada siapa yang bercakap di hujung talian....7 tahun telah berlalu
Peristiwa buruk itu telah berlalu tujuh tahun yang lalu, namun ianya sukar untuk hilang semuanya dari fikiran saya. Tujuh tahun lalu Abah saya dibawa pergi, hingga kini beliau tidak pernah balik ke rumah kami.

Pada tahun 2009 ini, maknanya hampir separuh usia saya membesar tanpa belaian kasih sayang, bimbingan dan sentuhan Abah walaupun beliau masih hidup. Saya membesar bertemankan barang-barang peribadinya seperti jam tangan, dompet, baju, seluar, kain pelikat dan buku-buku beliau. Saya sekadar mengikuti nasihat dan kata-kata beliau melalui surat-surat kirimannya. Jika rasa terlalu rindu padanya, saya akan pakai baju, seluar dan kain pelikat beliau. Saya letak gambar Abah di dompet duit bersebelahan dengan gambar saya.

Umi akan memastikan kami melawat Abah sekurang-kurangnya dua kali sebulan. Namun waktu lawatan selama 45 minit itu jauh dari mencukupi untuk Abah menghilangkan rindu, memberikan bimbingan, tunjuk ajar serta melepaskan kasih sayangnya kepada saya.
Satu peristiwa yang tidak dapat dilupakan ialah ketika lawatan pertama ke Kem pada 24 Jun 2002. Setelah hampir tiga minggu tidak melihat Abah sejak pertemuan terakhir di Bukit Aman, saya rasa terlalu rindu kepadanya. Kami berbual selama 45 minit dan di akhir pertemuan, Abah dibenarkan keluar dari bilik kurungan untuk bersalaman dengan saya dan Umi. Abah mengangkat, mendukung dan mencium saya berkali-kali. Saya terlalu rindukan Abah dan apabila warden bertugas menyuruh Abah masuk kembali ke bilik kurungan, saya menangis dan tidak mahu melepaskan pegangan pada lengan Abah...

Bagaikan binatang di zoo

Sejak hari pertama penahanan Abah hinggalah di saat ini, saya tidak pernah berpeluang mengerjakan solat dan membaca quran bersama beliau. Saya tidak mengharapkan duit belanja atau keluar membeli belah kerana memahami semua itu tidak mungkin dapat dilakukan bersama. Namun, satu perkara yang lebih memedihkan bermula pada bulan April 2005, kami keluarga tahanan hanya dibenarkan bertemu menggunakan interkom di sebalik dinding kaca lutsinar. Bila sahaja melihat Abah di sebalik cermin kaca, hati saya terasa hancur... Ketika itu, saya teringat binatang di zoo yang diletakkan di dalam kotak kaca. Apakah dosa dan kesalahan Abah diperlakukan sedemikian rupa. Sejak tarikh itu, setiap kali melawat Abah, saya hanya berpeluang bercakap melalui interkom dan duduk di sebalik kaca. Saya hanya dapat melihat wajah Abah, tetapi tidak dapat menyentuhnya...hati ini memang pedih yang teramat sangat.
Tujuh tahun saya dipisahkan dari Abah, namun tiada sebarang tanda beliau akan dibebaskan. Walaupun pada tahun 2009 ini ada dua pembebasan beramai-ramai yang mendapat tempat di dada media, namun nama Abah saya tiada dalam kedua-dua senarai pembebasan tersebut....
Perpisahan dengan Abah benar-benar membuat saya rasa rendah diri dan terpinggir. Saya terlalu ingin menjalani kehidupan harian bersama Abah. Saya ingin makan, berbual, bergurau senda dan melakukan pelbagai aktiviti harian bersamanya. Saya juga punya keinginan mempunyai keluarga yang lengkap, sama seperti orang lain.

Hingga kini saya tidak faham kenapa Abah saya, seorang yang pendiam dan mudah tersenyum, masih juga belum dibebaskan. Saya tidak tahu apakah sebenarnya kesalahan beliau kerana tahanan ISA lain yang ditahan bersama Abah tujuh tahun dulu, hampir semuanya telah pun dibebaskan... namun Abah masih tetap dikurung di Kem. Saya setuju dengan pendapat Umi bahawa Abah sepatutnya dibicarakan di mahkamah. Kalau benar ada bukti menyatakan dia salah, sekurang-kurangnya hakim akan menetapkan, bilakah tarikh akhir dia menjalani kehidupan sebagai banduan. Saya amat sedih mengenangkan kehidupan Abah dalam ketidakpastian selama tujuh tahun dan terus berlarutan. Saya akan terus berdoa pada Allah supaya Abah segera dibebaskan...

Pada mlm 28 Mac yg lalu,lebih kurang pukul 8.30 mlm hingga 9.30 mlm,seluruh dunia bergelap seketika selama hampir 1 jam untuk menunjukkan tanda sokongan kepada Earth Hour.

Earth Hour juga dikatakan sebagai 'stepping stone' untuk memulakan kempen mengurangkan Global Warming.Antara negara yg begitu bersemangat mempromosikan Earth Hour ialah AS,UK,Rusia dan negara2 Eropah.

Tanpa kita sedari bahawa negara2 ini lah yg menjadi penyumbang terbesar kepada Global Warming.Dengan ujian persenjataan mereka,sektor perindustrian yg sangat mencemarkan dan penggunaan tenaga nuklear yg berleluasa.

Apakah sebenarnya yg tersirat disebalik Earth Hour ini?Adakah langkah awal untuk mengurangkan Global Warming?

Kta lihat masyarakat Msia khusunya Melayu-Islam begitu teruja dengan kempen ini.Bagi aku,Earth Hour ini tidak mendatangkan kesan yg mantap.Ini hanya satu perencanaan yg dilakukan oleh pihak Barat yg mahu menunjukkan bahawa mereka telah menguasai mentaliti masyarakat Islam khususnya.

Adakah dengan menutup atau memutuskan bekalan elektrik untuk 1 jam sudah cukup untuk menjadi 'stepping stone' kepada pengurangan Global Warming? Jika nak dibandingkan dengan segala kerosakan dan kemusnahan yg dilakukan akibat peperangan.nuklear dan perindustrian..

AFI telah pun ditubuhkan pada tahun 1991. mase tuh aku baru 1 tahun & x tau apape tentang music hingge akhir 1999. AFI telah berjuang dalam underground scene dari tahun 1991-2003. lps 2003 afi tuka genre mengikut cita rasa trend semasa & terus meletup-letup di carta. ramai yg x kan percaya bahawa asal AFI adalah band hardcore punk yg agak ganas. tp bile kaji selidik history AFI,ramai yg akan terkejut bahawa bassist AFI Geoff Kresge yg berkhidmat dlm AFI dari tahun 1992-1997 pernah menganggotai band punk yg hebat Blank 77.

This is a satire of how some Malaysian politicians circa 2008 may have reacted to the question :-

PM Badawi - I did not cut down the tree, I was just taking a nap underneath it.

Carlo Giuliani, a 23-year-old Italian activist, poet and anarchist, was killed during the demonstrations against the Group of Eight summit that was held in Genoa from July 19 to July 21, 2001.

He was killed on July 20, during a clash between demonstrators and Italian Carabinieri (military police). The police were in a jeep and were engaged in a conflict with protesters; police were lobbing tear gas while demonstrators were throwing stones. Carlo Giuliani was holding a fire extinguisher and suggest that he intended to throw it at the police jeep. Carlo was told(at gunpoint) to put the extinguisher down, which he began to do and was shot in the face, and the rear wheel of the police jeep then ran over his body twice.

All charges against the police officer who allegedly shot him (Mario Placanica) have been dropped, the commission of inquiry concluding that the fatal bullet that struck Giuliani was deflected by a stone in mid-air. This conclusion was the subject of strong criticism, as was the decision not to charge the driver of the jeep on the basis that Giulani was already dead when ran over; medics tending to Giulani after he was run over testified that his heart was still beating[2]. Had it been concluded that Placanica shot Giuliani in self-defense, a trial would have been necessary, but the conclusion that the bullet was not fired directly at Giuliani removed the need for any trial.

A number of questions about Giuliani's death remain unanswered, particularly after Placanica told the media in 2003 that "I've been used to cover up the responsibility of others." After making this statement, Placanica was involved in a "suspicious" car accident, days after allegedly observing someone tampering with his car[3]. Placanica was also allegedly kept in seclusion following the incident, and his parents were not allowed to visit him in the hospital[4].

The plaza where he was shot, Piazza Alimonda, was unofficially renamed "Piazza Carlo Giuliani" by activists, who erected a memorial there for mementos, photographs, writings and flowers. This memorial has since been burned twice by unknown vandals. Another plaza, in Bern, Switzerland, has also been named "Carlo-Giuliani Platz" in memoriam; the renaming took place during a memorial art exhibition called The Geometries of Memory.

Although countless people, demonstrators included, have been killed and continue to be killed by police around the world, Carlo Giuliani is often held up as a martyr for what is commonly called the Anti-Globalization Movement.

Hardcore Punk began in the early 1980s with post punk bands like Black Flag, the Germs, Middle Class, Fear, Fugazi, Sick of It All, Teen Idles, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, and the Rollins Band. Hardcore bands in the beginning were rhythmically Hardcore Punk Rockloose and heavier then their forerunners like The Clash, and the Sex Pistols and played with more intensity and drive than punk bands typically did. Later the movement began to tighten rhythmically and the intensity increased as bands incorporated the energy of genres like heavy metal into their sonic repertoire. Also the style incorporates the social activism and political consciousness, anarchism of other movements with it to create a movement very distinct from its punk roots. The west coast group D.O.A. may be the first to coin the name hardcore in relationship to punk with the release of Hardcore 81 which was very influential and did much to fuel the genre but there are examples of hardcore bands which go back to the late 70's like Black Flag, The Pagans, The Viletones, The Germs, Chain Gang, The Misfits and others.

The movement is divided much as rap music is with east coast and west coast although other subdivisions exist as well. East coastHardcore Punk hardcore tends to be more smooth, with grooves that flow in context with the vocalist who sings or shouts the lyrics. West coast hardcore tends to be harder with rhythms that start and stop with intense bursts and vocals that combine screaming and low growling lyrics." Hardcore originated primarily around major cities like LA, DC, NYC, and Boston, as a vehicle for expressing resentment at collective double standards within the punk scene itself and outside. From about 1980 to 1984 the two most popular hardcore bands were Minor Threat from Washington D.C. and Black Flag from Los Angeles. Minor Threat were greatly inspired by Washington D.C.'s Bad Brains. Minor Threat combined a loose experimentalism reminiscent of the original punk movement while Black Flag released their album Damaged which defined the musical aggression of hardcore to some fans. Discharge were among the first to simplify the genre with speed driven blasts of intense rhythms within a simple three chord song structure.

In the 1980s hardcore music combined with heavy metal with bands such as DRI, and Sick of It All. There have been many sub movements within hardcore like the straight-edge movement which got its name from a Minor Threat song which advised avoidance of drugs, alcohol, and promiscuous sex. More recent hardcore bands like NoMeansNo, Fugazi, D.O.A, and The Ex, continue in this tradition to carry on the mantle of hardcore punk rock.

hmmmm..susah nak buat research kalau nak tau asal usul punk. pelik gak bila ada yg ckp vincent van gogh seorang anarchy, ade pule yg lebih tak masuk akal iaitu dibawa oleh sid vicious sendiri. sedangkan sid vicious merupakan peminat sex pistols sebelum bertemu johnny rotten dan menjadi bassist sex pistols (tapi tak tau maen bass & nyanyi). dari segale research aku, kemunculan pistols, ramones, clash dan sebagainye tidak pernah memberi sebarang jawapan. damn!

genre punk lahir dari genre rock and roll, rockabilly, garage rock, frat rock, psychedelic rock, pub rock, glam rock. so tidak hairan lagi lah kalau kite dengar lagu2 classic rock skrg ade gaya punk zaman2 dahulu kala. kalau nak example yg pelik sangat, cuba la denga lagu2 ronan keating lepastuh try denga lagu china dendangan red rockers. tapi jangan pula samekan ronan keating dengan punk. genre pada zaman ini sudah maju teramat lah sangat. dari discharge, the adicts, black flag, minor threat, sham 69 hinggalah the casualties, the unseen, exploited, anti-flag dan sebagainya. band2 pada zaman ini byk yg rosakkan imej punk. antaranya avril, blink 182, dan greenday. memanglah jika didengar dari rentak, terdapat iras2 offspring, anti-flag dan nofx tetapi jika didengar dari seni kata, amatlah jauh bezanya. dari sini, dapatlah kita bezakan yg mana pop dan yg mana punk rock.

music ialah ekspresi. kebanyakan band punk menitik beratkan terhadap kualiti lirik. creative merupakan aspek penting. ini kerana band punk berjuang di dalam lagu mereka. rentak lagu menjadi soalan kedua. sebagai keputusan, walau music happy atau ganas bagaimana sekalipun, lirik membawa maksud sebenar. sebagai contoh, mcdollar by ska-p, kawan by plague of happiness dan sebagainya. inilah faktor yg membuatkan genre punk tetap lebih "jahat" jika dibandingkan dgn genre screamo yg rentak music ganas-ganas belaka seperti from first to last dan bless the fall. ini kerana lirik emo/screamo lebih kearah depressing manakala punk lebih kepada rebel, lebih berani.

masyarakat sudah tentunya mengenal pasti punk dengan cara pemakaian. ye amatlah senang dikenal pasti dengan jacket kulit, tshirt lusuh, jeans ketat & sumtimes ade patches, spike, boots. tetapi punk bukanlah sekadar berfashion. jadi apa gunanya sekiranya seseorang itu berupaya utk memiliki pelbagai outfit/stuffs tp x tau ape pun psl punk. punk ialah ideologi dan cara berfikir. punk ialah kebebasan berfikir secara meluas, termasuklah isu-isu dan aspek-aspek seperti penindasan,kapitalis, ketidak samarataan, kekejaman, kezaliman, politik, korupsi, sosial, agama dan sebagainya. mengapa kita rebel? fikirlah sendiri. berfikir amatlah penting. sebagai contoh, sid vicious yang "talentless" bleh menjadi bintang punk yg sgt glamour. gaya menyanyi, gaya pemakaian dan pogo dance sid vicious tidak mati hingga ke hari ini. amatlah bodoh jika akal fikiran kurniaan tuhan itu disia-siakan. punk tidak mengajar atau menyuruh kita bergaduh sesama sendiri, bersifat gangster, vandalisme. walaupun punk against authority tetapi tidak pula kita perlu bakar semua balai polis. walaupun terdapat lirik yg berunsur keganasan seperti alcoholic, glue sniffing tp perlukah punk buat camtuh? aku rasa tak perlu sebab byk band yg x ambek dadah,lirik je nak ganas. dari sini,kita dah pun faham bahawa punk bukanlah berfashion semata-mata. mungkin budak nerd kat sekolah tu punk, sape tahu?

be yourself. ini merupakan faktor yg paling penting dlm diri seorang punk. tidak terikut-ikut atau senang terpengaruh. tidak salah utk mengikut jejak idol hingga berjaya tp dah jadi salah kalau perempuan dianggap murah nak mampus. pelacur pon beli pakai duit. ni ade gak yg free dpt fuck pas2 bla tinggal camtuh je. punk ialah kebebasan jd semua bende boleh dibuat dgn bebas tp daya pemikiran tidak patut diketepikan. sebab itu terdapat punk yg berkumpulan dan ade yg bersendirian. semuanya terpulang kepada diri sendiri.

punk bukan suatu organisasi. tiada yuran tahunan dikenakan. semuanya bebas mengikut kehendak sendiri. tidak perlu ada "gang" utk jd punk. hanya bergaul dengan semua org tanpa mengira bangsa, agama, bahasa, colour. tidak perlu berpuak-puak. tidak perlu berclan-clan. tidak perlu ade ID. tidak perlu memusuhi sesiapa. kita semua sama. kita bukan rempit! oleh kerana semuanya mengikut kehendak sendiri, kita boleh enjoy dan have fun dengan maksima dengan cara yg selamat, sehat walafiat. antaranya enjoy di gig. kita berjuang sambil bergembira. dapat berkumpul ramai-ramai, mendapat kenalan baru, bertukar-tukar pandangan, idea dan falsafah.

DIY? diy ialah singkatan kepada "do it yourself". terdapat pelbagai faedah melalui diy. antaranya penjimatan duit, kepuasan dan tidak mengharapkan pihak kapitalis. seperti yg kita tahu, apa sahaja barang boleh didapati dengan senang di kedai. tetapi diy tetap menjadi pilihan kepada punk khususnya. "another man's trash is another man's treasure". diy menguji creativity, kesabaran dan memberi kepuasan yg maksima. segala titik peluh kita sendiri akan lebih dihargai. for example, perlukah kita beli skinny jeans di kedai2 harga ganas x hengat! atau kite boleh beli jeans di sempadan thailand dan jahit sendiri? kesimpulannya, diy melatih kita utk independent.

membaca dan gain knowledge amatlah disarankan. oleh itu sekolah juga penting. aku suka membaca dan membuat research sendiri terhadap sesuatu. tidak menjadi kesalahan jika kita tahu mengapa sesetengah skinhead pakai braces, ada apa dengan adolf hitler, neonazi, paki basher dan sebagainya. dengan segala knowledge yg diperoleh, kita tidaklah terikut-ikut gejala nagative. terdapat byk lagi sebab mengapa knowledge itu penting. kenapa mak dan ayah hantar kita ke sekolah?

anda poser? aku pun poser. ini kerana sebelum seseorang itu mendalami punk, beliau dilabel poser. tetapi bila sudah tahu apa yg mereka patut tahu, barulah true. kat sini, aku mengaku bahawa aku TAK PERNAH anggap diri aku sbg true punk. malaysia nih kecik je, tidak perlulah dibandingkan dengan england or us. jadi bagaimana kita hendak "fuck the system"? nak tak nak, ikut sajalah. kene pijak tapi masih bernafas lebih bagus dari di"smackdown" hingga tidak berdaya. jadi poser yg berniat utk maju kehadapan dan berwawasan tidak pernah mendatangkan masalah. bagaimana pula dengan trendy? trendy ialah segelintir manusie yg berattitude buruk na'uzubillah! jika tgk bola, kaum nih mase mula2 support german, bila german kalah, die support spain. kaum ini juga sering dilihat kejap berfeatures seperti metalhead,lepas seminggu dah jadi seorang raver. of course sesetengah manusie ingin membakar kaum ini hidup2 kerana kaum ini bukan membusukkan punk sahaja. tetapi tidak perlulah berbuat demikian kerana perbuatan itu memudaratkan diri sendiri sahaja. fikirlah sendiri bagaimana utk membanteras kaum nih.

Persoalan sekarang apakah asas perbandingan tersebut sedangkan negara negara tersebut bukan pengeluar minyak? Hujah seperti inilah yang di gunakan oleh barisan pemimpin untuk memperbodohkan orang kampung.

Ok, disini fakta yang semua orang kena tahu.

Pertama sekali sila lihat
perbandingan harga minyak malaysia dan negara negara pengeluar minyak yang lain:-

Dari data di atas, membuktikan propaganda kerajaan adalah palsu dan tidak benar.

Kesemua negara pengeluar minyak di atas, harga minyak adalah di bawah RM1.00 seliter.

Ada sesetengah alasan mengatakan keluaran minyak kita tak sebanyak arab saudi yang mengeluarkan sejuta tong sehari.

Menurut kerajaan, pengeluaran minyak kita adalah dalam lingkungan 700 ribu tong sehari.

Oleh itu kalau berdasarkan ratio pengeluaran minyak antara arab saudi dan malaysia 1 juta : 700 ribu, sepatutnya harga minyak malaysia dalam lingkungan RM0.30 sen sahaja.

Kenapa arab saudi boleh kekalkan harga minyak pada 0.19 sen seliter tapi malaysia pada 1.92 sen? Bukan kah jauh bezanya?Bagaimana pula dengan venezuella yang jumlah penduduk hampir sama
dengan malaysia boleh kekalkan harga minyak pada 0.16 sen seliter sahaja? Ini menunjukkan ada sesuatu yang tak kena dalam menguruskan hasil minyak dalam negara.

Ketika dato seri anwar ibrahim menjawat jawatan menteri kewangan malaysia pada tahun 1991-1998, harga minyak di kekalkan pada 1.10 sen seliter.

Bagaimana beliau boleh mengekalkan harga minyak selama lapan tahun sedangkan harga minyak dunia naik mendadak ketika perang teluk di iraq? Pada masa yang sama juga pembangunan dan projek projek banyak juga di jalankan dalam negara tanpa perlu naikkan harga minyak.

Tapi pemimpin kerajaan beri alasan untuk naikan harga minyak supaya duit tersebut dapat tampung projek pembangunan.

Masalah sekarang projek pembangunan untuk faedah siapa?Rakyat atau kroni?Berapa kerat orang yang dapat faedah dari koridor pembangunan di sana sini?

Subsidi minyak yang di tanggung kerajaan mencapai 35 billion setahun.

Kerajaan bersungguh sungguh untuk mengurang kan subsidi minyak ini kerana kalau harga minyak tidak di naikkan dengan segera ianya akan mengganggu peruntukan kerajaan bagi membangunkan koridor koridor di seluruh negara yang bernilai ratusan billion.

Yang orang asyik berhujah ialah harga minyak perlu di naikkan kerana harga minyak dunia telah naik.

Ada yang mengatakan ia masalah global.

So yang kita kita fikir ialah kenapa nak risau tentang harga minyak dunia yang
melambung naik kerana sepatutnya sebagai negara pengeluar minyak, malaysia seharusnya gembira kerana bila harga minyak dunia naik, pendapatan petronas jadi berlipat ganda.

So apa masalahnya? Walaupun malaysia ada mengimport minyak dari luar untuk kegunaan tempatan, tapi bila dah net off dari pendapatan export, masih untung besar lagi.

Adakah negara akan bankrupt kalau turunkan harga minyak?? Sudah tentu tidak.

Bila kerajaan membuat pelan untuk pembangunan projek di atas, sudah tentulah kerajaan mempunyai wang yang banyak.

Jadi, jika kerajaan sanggup membelanjakan ratusan billion untuk projek pembangunan seperti di atas yang hanya boleh di manafaatkan oleh segelintir rakyat sahaja, kenapa nak tampung subsidi 35 billion setahun pun tak mampu? Mana yang lebih penting? Mana yang perlu di utamakan? Kebajikan rakyat atau projek mega?

Bila menteri menteri beri komen tentang ekonomi, semuanya berkata yang bagus bagus, tapi bila bercakap soal subsidi minyak, dah cakap lain pulak.

So kalau Dato Najib kata turunkan harga minyak akan buat negara bankrup,bagaimana projek ratusan billion di atas? Tak bankrup kah negara dengan projek ratusan billion tersebut?Perlu di ingat bahawa di samping pendapatan hasil petroleum, negara juga mempunyai hasil dari sumber lain seperti getah, sawit, taxation, balak dan lain lain.

Pendapatan tahunan negara kalau di ambil kira harga minyak yang melambung naik bakal mencecah 200 billion setahun.

Dari jumlah tersebut susah sangat ke nak sumbangkan 50 billion untuk beri subsidi pada rakyat?

The naphtha produced is used as feedstock for the Aromatics plant adjacent to the refinery.

ii. In the State of Melaka , the PETRONAS Melaka Refinery Complex houses two refining trains.

The first train, known as PSR-1, is owned and operated by PETRONAS Penapisan (Melaka) Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of PETRONAS.

Completed in 1994, the train has a capacity to process 100,000 barrels per day of Malaysian light, sweet crude and condensates.

iii. The Complex's second train, the PSR-2, is owned by Malaysia Refining Company Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between PETRONAS and Conoco.

Operated by PETRONAS Penapisan (Melaka), the train commenced operations in phases from December 1998 and has a rated capacity of 100,000 barrels per day of sweet
and sour crude.

Apart from PETRONAS' refineries, there are two other refineries owned and operated respectively by Shell and ExxonMobil.

The country's combined refining capacity now stands at 546,500 bpd.

Dikutip dari web di atas menyatakan , Malaysia mengeluarkan sebanyak 750,200 tong minyak sehari.

Malaysia juga mempunyai kilang menapis minyak sendiri di Kertih , Terengganu dengan kapasiti sebanyak 63,500 tong sehari ; di Melaka Kompleks 1 sebanyak 100,000 tong sehari ; Kompleks 2 sebanyak 100,000 tong sehari.

Semua sumber minyak mentah adalah dari telaga di pesisir pantai Terengganu, iaitu dari jenis Malaysian light, sweet crude, seperti di atas.

Minyak yang disalur dari lapangan, offshore oleh Petronas Carigali ke TCOT – Terengganu Crude Oil Terminal , akan melalui proses pengasingan bagi menghasilkan crude oil dan seterusnya dihantar ke Kilang Penapisan Petronas di Kertih dan Melaka untuk proses penyulingan.

Sebahagian besar dari crude oil keluaran TCOT tadi akan disalurkan ke Jeti Kertih , bagi tujuan eksport.

Ini bermakna, apa yang difahami , minyak yang digunakan dalam pasaran dalam negeri, adalah diproses dan ditapis di dalam negara.

Apa yang lebih penting , crude oil atau minyak mentah yang diproses dan ditapis juga adalah berpunca dari sumber minyak mentah pesisir pantai negara, iaitu Terengganu dari jenis Malaysian light, sweet crude.

Cadangan

i. Kerajaan seharusnya dan sepatutnya boleh mengarahkan Petronas membuat urusniaga secara yang bertanggungjawab dan mesra rakyat.

Ini kerana Petronas adalah syarikat milik negara dan diamanah untuk mengurus hasil
minyak dan gas bagi kebajikan negara dan lebih – lebih lagi rakyatnya.

Bukankah begitu?

ii. Minyak, merupakan sumber alam kurniaaan Allah , untuk dimanfaatkan oleh penduduk di sesuatu negara , dimana ia ditemui dan juga manusia seluruhnya.

iii. Petronas Carigali atau TCOT seharusnya mempunyai iltizam untuk membuat tanggungjawab sosial, ke atas rakyat Malaysia, dengan mengenakan harga yang murah dan rendah, bukanlah bermakna ke tahap rugi, kepada Petronas Penapisan di Terengganu atau Melaka, yang kedua – duanya juga adalah dalam satu kumpulan induk Petronas.

iv. Kedua–dua Petronas Carigali dan TCOT , tidak harus mengenakan harga minyak menurut harga pasaran antarabangsa ke atas Petronas Penapisan, kerana ia adalah keluaran dalam negara kita sendiri.

Ini Cuma pendapat bodoh saya SAHAJA.

v. Seterusnya Petronas Penapisan, boleh mengenakan harga yang rendah dan mampu dibeli oleh rakyat Malaysia.

Inilah tanggungjawab sosial yang harus ditunaikan.

vi. Tidak ada maknanya, minyak dari perut bumi sendiri, digali oleh syarikat sendiri melalui perkongsian , diproses oleh syarikat sendiri, dan seterusnya dijual kepada rakyat negara ini sendiri, tetapi dikenakan harga mengikut pasaran antarabangsa.

Ini namanya pengurusan yang tidak bijak oleh pemimpin yang mungkin juga tidak bijak.

vii. Untuk menjana pendapatan sebenar dan membuat keuntungan besar kepada
Petronas, pasaran eksport sentiasa tersedia, dengan mengenakan harga mengikut pasaran antarabangsa.

Apa lagi nak?

Persoalan

* Adakah kerajaan perihatin kepada rakyat yang telah memberikan amanah untuk mengurus dan mentadbir negara , termasuklah juga menggunakan sebaik mungkin hasil dan khazanah negara, khususnya minyak?

* Adakah kini adalah peluang terbaik untuk rakyat teramai, memikirkan semula amanah yang telah diberikan kepada UMNO/BN, dengan mencari pilihan atau alternatif parti lain, yang lebih mengutamakan kebajikan rakyat?

* Adakah Pakatan Rakyat boleh diberikan amanah itu? Atau nanti ianya serupa juga dengan UMNO/BN?

* Seharusnya kerajaan UMNO/BN lebih bertanggungjawab dan menunaikan tanggungjawab dengan menjaga kebajikan rakyat kerana amanah telah diberikan dan bukan membebankannya.

These are some of the words that makes you feel shy to be yourself. This is why some humans are having problems to fit in. In my opinion,being yourself is the best. This is because, you're doing/wearing what ever stuff that you like. Some people always wears/do something that dont like just to follow the trend,get some attention and finally ends up regret. Ok some maybe some friends will be laughing at you when you are "different" but they are your friends. They will accept you even if you look like a teletubies.

The "trend" will be changing everyday. And people will be wasting their cash to look like the daily updated catalog even if dont like it. To me,this is horseshit. Some people dont even know what they are doing. For example,todays hot trend is having a "big camera". People will start buying the "big camera" using their "big cash", start studying about shutter,colours,etc and suddenly the "big camera" trend goes expired and people starts having a microscope. The "big camera" will end up in a trash can,under your bed,etc. Damn! You can't buy those "big camera" with your nose hair. As a result, the "rich" will never stop laughing,the "poor" will never stop suffering. These trends really kills! Wow! What an impact!

The companies always find a way to poisoned the kids mind by setting a hot trend. The effects will be like "Whoa! everyone wears that shit,im gonna have one too" "it does look nice on that model" "its gonna be so damn cool if i get to wear some of those!" "Im gonna be like the others!" "im gonna be so cool!" Wake up people! You dont have to hurt yourselves! You can ignore the trend,be tough. hahaha! To me,i didn't give a fuck what others think about me. I just do what i like to do,play what i like play,wear what i like to wear. Im happy being myself. Even if i looked like a retard. Being crazy is not a crime. The trend is a crime!

I did noticed some girls wearing lotsa cashy stuff just to attract others. hmmm..what attracts me is girls walking around naked. hohoho! naked doesn't have anything to do with money. hwahahaharr! (damn,porno do kills braincells)

Recently,i went to klcc with some buddies and i saw lotsa "topman models", "MNG catalog" kids. Do they really like the outfit they are wearing? I wonder what their cabinet looks like. And i did realise some groups are staring at me like i am an alien. When i looked them in the eyes,they quickly act like chatting,eating,etc..wtf?

The word "old fashioned" does not exist, different is unique, learn how to listen to your heart and have fun!

Straight Edge?

What exactely does Straight Edge mean in it’s original definition?

-no consume of alcohol, no consume of tabacco and renunciation of any other drug
-no promiscuity (sex with often changing partners)
-As an addition the majority of Straight Edgers started to feed themselves vegetarian or even vegan. Especially in Europe you will only find few Straight Edgers who are not nourishing themselves vegetarian or even vegan, the Straight Edge lifestyle normally makes people turn away quite fast from a meat based diet.

Where does Straight Edge come from?

Late 70's, USA, Washington D.C. - the local punk scene is bigger than ever, but as time goes by many punks just turn into weird dressed colourful junkies. Normal shows can only be accessed from people older than 21 years to protect minors from the dangers of alcohol abuse. The only exception are so called “all ages” shows. At these shows minors will receive an "X" on the back of their hands, painted with a black magic marker, to exclude them from getting alcohol (through this X they could easily be identified as minors at the counter).

Some of the teens were quite unsatisfied with the way the scene developed back then, with all its drug abuse and slogans like “no future”, therefore they took the initiative and founded their own bands, wrote their own lyrics against drug abuse and the resulting lethargy. They started to preach other ideals which were much more constructive than the average punk bands message back then. At that time the hardcore scene was born out of the cornerstones of the punk scene. Some punk ideas lived on in hardcore, for example the diy ethic (do it yourself), some politic ideals and independence, but all the cynic and destructive elements were replaced by way more positive messages.
One of these lyrics was giving a whole sub culture its name:

While Minor Threat became more popular many older punks began to paint the X which was known from all ages shows on their hands to declare their solidarity with the younger kids and to give up alcohol and drugs with them together - the whole movement had its sign from that time on. (Note: Even when most people think that Minor Threat are the founders of the straight edge philosophy some others believe that the band Teen Idles, something like a pre-Minor Threat band, expressed these thoughts first without getting so popular with it). Within the next years Straigt Edge bands were founded all over the USA, shortly after that the idea received more attention in Europe and found the first followers (Benelux countries, Germany and southern Europe first).

Where does the name “Straight Edge” come from (often abridged: sXe, SE, XXX…)?

Well, it is almost impossible to give a secured answer on this topic, therefore we’ll keep it short: Allegedly the drummer of the aformentioned band (who was one of the first people to preach a drugfree lifestyle) designed a poster for one of their shows for which he took a ruler. After he had drawn a right ankle (or straight edge) on the poster he declared this as a symbol for their new born lifestyle. After that the lyrics to straight edge were written, at least that's what the legend says… As mentioned above noone will ever find out the truth about this, another story says that he drew nothing but a straight line, and that this was the reason for calling
it straight edge…

Where do all these "rules" about straight edge come from?

The basic principles were defined through a songtext while all the other facettes that straight edge stands for nowadays are a development from many years from many scenes from all parts of the world:

These principles simply stand for respect for your own mind and body as well as for the opposite sex and your fellows. Songwriter Ian McKaye was not thinking about some strict set of rules to create more healthy humans who feel as something special, these principles should not exist to end in yourself (note: the editor of these lyrics probably never thought about starting some youth subculture, because nobod could imagine to start something like this with his own personal opinion…). On the contrary of this - a clear mind should allow humans to perceive the world around them better and to recognice and to fight against deplorable states of affairs in their social surroundings. This can be of ethic-moral, ecologic or politic nature or can simply include problems from your very own personal surroundings.

To broaden your horizon on this set of rules and to use your head is the task for every straight edger. There is no sxe-legislative that sets rules, everyone is creating his own rules, of course without ever loosing sight on the basic principles. (also see below: personal widenings)

Some of the most common misunderstandings about Straight Edge:

Although the majority of all straight edgers is nourishing themselves at least vegetarian in the meantime, which is something very desirable but still not imperative. The original meaning of the concept as it was formed beginning / middle 80's was only relating to a life without drugs and the renunciation on sex with often changing partners, but:
- Straight Edgers are not giving up sex. The only thing that is disapproved is promiscuity (sex with frequently changing partners, the “follow your dick around” thing, that typical college behaviour: "who is getting the most girls?")
- straight edge itself has nothing to do with intolerance or violence against people thinking different.

Is Straight Edge = Drug Free?

Yes and No! If you take the definition given above it should be clear that beeing straight edge includes a drugfree living, but: In the USA the word “drug1free” has another meaning, sometimes people who consume beer or cigarettes call themselves drugfree, only because they have nothing to do with hard drugs like cocain, speed or heroin. Tabacco and beer are no drugs after this definition. Of course this view on the straight edge idea is kind of half-hearted and almost wrong. Every Straight Edger is living drug free but not every person who lives drug free is serious about this and lives straight edge.

How popular is Straight Edge?

The popularity of straight edge is always swaying, as well as the activity within the hc scene itself (on which the straight edge idea is (unfortunately) still limited). While there was a definitive high in the activity of the scene as well as for straight edge in New York City in 1988 people disagree today if straight edge is getting more popular, if its popularity decreases or if it stayed almost the same for the last 20 years.

Of course this was exactely what the media was waiting for... Luckily excesses of this kind remained exceptions, after many ups and downs the popularity and the activity within and outside of the scene is somehow regulating itself.

How and why do I become Straight Edge and how long should I stay Straight Edge?

-How: simple decision. If you are willing to accept the ideals should be enough to call yourself straight edge. Of course it would not be a good idea to show up the next day with drugfree patches everywhere and to preach the truth to all who are unworthy, this is not looking very convincing. Take your time while you discover beeing straight edge. Often exactly the people who are digging in it that fast are the ones who are gone first.
- The reasons for becoming straight edge are already discussed above:
Obtaining self control, take more consideration on your surrounding, bail out of the normal way of life, people in your personal / familiar surrounding who you want to keep on distance are only some reasons. How long should I stay straight edge?

Well, the decision to become Straight Edge should normally last a whole life, at least that would be the ideal case. In reality people often turn away after some years beeing straight edge while new faces show up, only few remain as stable as it should be. It is not excluded that you find again to straight edge after you once “lost the edge”, it may be that you are even more stable then.

What means "personal widenings" of the original idea of Straight Edge?

As written above the exact definition of what straight edge is and means to people differs from individual to individual. While the foundation always stays the same every straight edger discovers some details over the time that are important for himself beeing straight edge. Hardline (see below) was only a small part of this, and it was already one of the major modifications that could be found. In the USA for some straight edgers strict continence is the last consequence in becoming straight edge, but this is only a small minority. Often these modifications of and additions to the straight edge idea are causing some turmoil, some agree, some disagree and other are revolting against it. You may also meet straight edgers who are claiming that their life is affected by straight edge almost everywhere, e.g. I once met a person who told me that he was showing more consideration in road traffic after becoming straight edge. Of course straight edge influences your relations to other people, at least at most straight edgers, some others take it that far that they feel their life in school or in their job changed to the better. As mentioned above, the line where these personal aspects of straight edge begin and where they stop should be discovered by everyone himself, discussing this topic would be superflous and almost philosophic, everyone should discover for himself how far straight edge affects his life. Only the foundations should be the same.

Besides the at some places welcome militant anti drugs / animal rights position the abortion aspect is one of the most discussed topic within the whole HC scene, especially at the beginning / middle of the 90's it was responsible for some serious division within the scene between pro lifers (against abortion) and pro choicers (for the right of the woman to decide over her own body). Are there nazi Straight Edgers?

Every now and then, every good cause gets abducted by morons who would like to take a peaceful idea to radical proportions, trying to promote ideas that couldn´t be more contrary. There have been isolated incididents of individuals trying to link the straight edge to right wing ideology. However, if you carefully examine any of those attempts, you will find that any source, particulary websites, promoting such a mix will rarely feature a proper imprint or any contact information at all. Any band claiming such philosophy would have an extremely hard time to get any stage time outside events that are intended for a racist audience anyway. Compare it to entering stage on a Quaker-Festival and announcing your invention of "quake edge", you would hardly find anyone protesting. It is safe to say that any attempt to put the straight edge, the hardcore scene or punk itself in the wrong corner usually results in very strong reactions from the community.

HUGH DOWNS What parents wouldn’t like their teenager to live a clean, healthy life, swearing off cigarettes and drugs and alcohol? Well, a movement called Straight Edge encourages kids to do just that. Straight Edge sounds like a parent’s dream come true. So why are many people and a lot of law enforcement officials afraid of it? John Quinones has a terrifying story of Straight Edge followers going way over the edge in their passion for what they believe in.

JOHN QUINONES, ABCNEWS (VO) This may look like your typical punk rock concert, but it’s not. Many of these kids are members of a growing subculture in America called Straight Edge. It may look wild and violent, but believe it or not, the kids say it’s all good, clean fun. In fact, so—called "Straight Edgers" don’t even drink. They don’t smoke, and they don’t do drugs. It’s all part of the "straight" in Straight Edge.

JOE, STRAIGHT EDGE MEMBER All Straight Edge is, is a way to live your life better. It’s a way to live your life positive, and it’s a brotherhood.

DAVE, STRAIGHT EDGE MEMBER Like, if I wasn’t Straight Edge, I could just sell out. I could just not be drug—free anymore. It wouldn’t make any difference. But being Straight Edge, I have Straight Edge friends. It’s more of a commitment.

ANDY MAUNCH, STRAIGHT EDGE MEMBER It’s like, what’s so bad about us? We don’t drink. We don’t smoke. A lot of us don’t have promiscuous sex. It doesn’t sound too bad to me.

JOHN QUINONES (VO) Not bad at all, as long as you agree with the Straight Edge philosophy. But watch out if you don’t.

DEPUTY BRAD HARMON, SALT LAKE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE I’ve not ever seen them back down. They will stand and fight for their cause.

JOHN QUINONES (VO) Brad Harmon is a deputy with the gang unit of the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office. He says Straight Edgers may boast of being squeaky clean and health conscious, but he’s found many of them are nothing more than violent gang members who assault people who smoke and beat up people who drink alcohol.

BRAD HARMON Anybody that would say that they’re not violent has not looked into them as a whole.

JOHN QUINONES (VO) The reality, says Harmon, is that the most militant Straight Edgers are nothing more than suburban terrorists, rebels with passionate causes. Not only are they opposed to tobacco, alcohol and drugs, many of them are strict vegetarians and staunch defenders of animal rights. Police say some Straight Edgers are so determined to prove their point that they firebombed this McDonald’s restaurant because it sells meat. They tried to set this store on fire because it sells leather. And then there was that bombing two years ago, just outside Salt Lake City. (on camera) This is the headquarters for a Utah the cooperative of fur breeders. Its members are farmers who raise minks for a living. In March 1997, police say six young men tied to the Straight Edge movement allegedly planted and then exploded several pipe bombs here, causing almost $1 million in damages. (VO) Authorities called it one of the most violent attacks in the US in the name of animal rights. In all, more than 40 cases of arson, vandalism or serious assault in Utah have been traced to the Straight Edge movement. Police say it’s one of the fastest growing gangs in the state, with an estimated 2,000 followers, about 200 to 400 of them considered prone to violence. (on camera) Are these kids as dangerous as the Bloods, the Crips? Can they be?

BRAD HARMON I consider them every bit as dangerous. We see them carry weapons. We see them maiming people. We see them doing millions of dollars of destruction to business people around the city. In other countries, they call it terrorism. I would say it’s about the same thing here.

JOHN QUINONES They sound like politically correct terrorists.

BRAD HARMON I couldn’t say it better myself.

DAVE We don’t have a leader. It’s nothing like a gang.

JOHN QUINONES (VO) Meet some of the Straight Edgers from Salt Lake. Most of them say they’re against violence. In fact, any one of them—Dave, Mark, Joe—could be the boy next door.

MARK You meet a Straight Edge kid, don’t immediately assume there’s some violent hatemonger because that’s not the case.

JOE By no means do we go around acting like hard asses or tough guys.

JOHN QUINONES (VO) But now listen to Andy Maunch (ph). He has a more belligerent tone than the rest of his friends, saying that he gets in fights all the time, but that they’re not his fault.

ANDY MAUNCH I’ve got to die sometime. It might as well be dying standing up for what I believe in.

JOHN QUINONES (VO) Andy says he wouldn’t beat up someone who was smoking. But if someone insists on blowing smoke in his face and he can’t get away from him, he has no problem getting violent.

ANDY MAUNCH If it resorts to violence, yeah, then I don’t have a problem with that. I mean, that’s disrespectful to me, and that’s harming my body. I don’t tolerate it.

JOHN QUINONES (on camera) But they have a right to smoke.

ANDY MAUNCH And I have a right to breathe clean air, too.

JOHN QUINONES (VO) Who are these Straight Edgers? Well, they don’t have gang leaders, and they remain rather elusive. But we do know that most are teenagers who come from upper—middle class white families. The movement was started in the New York area in the 1980s by kids who were old enough to go into nightclubs but not old enough to be served alcohol. The Straight Edgers, marked by an "X" on their hands, started bonding together. (on camera) But why have some elements of the Straight Edge movement turned so violent here in Salt Lake City? Well, this is the home of the Mormon church. It’s a conservative community that prides itself on family values. On the surface, Straight Edge, with its no smoking, no drinking, no drugs approach, fits right into those values. The parents of Straight Edgers are so impressed with that approach that few of them noticed when some of their kids started taking their cause to an extreme, far over the edge. (Fraternity brothers singing) (VO) Take the night last September when Straight Edgers met these fraternity brothers from the University of Utah. The frat boys say they were hanging out at this pizza parlor when one of them stepped outside and asked a Straight Edger for a light.

MIKE ORTHNER (PH), FRATERNITY BROTHER I asked one of them for a lighter. And they said, "We don’t do that thing. We don’t use fire."

JOHN QUINONES (VO) Within minutes, Mike Orthner says he and his frat brothers were jumped by more than a dozen Straight Edgers armed with brass knuckles and other weapons.

MIKE ORTHNER Right there, I got hit with brass knuckles, right in the forehead. I went down, and then I just tried to push everybody off me, fight back. But it was 10 on one. And three of them had brass knuckles. I got hit in the back of the head with a sword.

JOHN QUINONES (on camera) A sword?

MIKE ORTHNER A sword.

JOHN QUINONES (VO) Fraternity brother Ryan Taggart (ph) couldn’t believe it.

RYAN TAGGART, FRATERNITY BROTHER This kid was waving around this Samurai sword, and a couple of us, we were just yelling, you know, "Drop your metal." You know, "We don’t need this." The kid with the sword honestly looked a little crazy. I mean, he’s just waving it around like he’s teasing us with this sword.

MIKE ORTHNER They’re just vicious, you know. It’s like piranhas, a pack of piranhas on me.

JOHN QUINONES (on camera) Were you trying to get them to drink or trying to get them to smoke?

RYAN TAGGART No. No, we were doing our own thing.

JOHN QUINONES (VO) And this wasn’t their first big fight. Several months earlier, an almost identical brawl with Straight Edgers sent frat brother Michael Larson (ph) to the emergency room.

MICHAEL LARSON, FRATERNITY BROTHER And before I knew it, I was being assaulted with a baseball bat. I sustained a few hits on the head, and I was out, unconscious.

JOHN QUINONES (VO) Andy and his friends say they were not at those fights with the fraternity brothers, but they know fellow Straight Edgers who were there. And they say the frat boys provoked it.

ANDY MAUNCH I would have helped them if I was there. I would have done all I can to put everyone in the hospital.

JOHN QUINONES (VO) The issue wasn’t smoking or drinking, they say. It was respect. (on camera) But what gives you the right to enforce with brutality your likes and dislikes?

ANDY MAUNCH If someone doesn’t like it, then they shouldn’t be disrespectful.

JOHN QUINONES But that doesn’t mean you beat them up?

ANDY MAUNCH If that’s what happens, oh, well.

JOHN QUINONES You really mean that? What do you think of these frat guys?

ANDY MAUNCH I hate them.

PROF THERESA MARTINEZ (PH), UNIVERSITY OF UTAH Some of these kids are very, very much part of the cause. They really believe that what they are fighting for is righteous.

JOHN QUINONES (VO) Theresa Martinez is a sociology professor at the University of Utah who specializes in street gangs. She’s been tracking the Straight Edge movement for the past five years.

THERESA MARTINEZ If you strip away the message, in many ways, this is just another gang. Straight Edge is just another gang.

JOHN QUINONES (VO) The Straight Edge movement has now spread throughout the country. And though it’s mostly nonviolent, authorities here say they are getting calls of concern from police agencies in other states.

BRAD HARMON Most of the time when they go to war or go to battle, they have a plan of attack. It’s just not a quick provoked incident. They usually know that somewhere they’re going to have this occur during the night.

JOHN QUINONES (on camera) They accuse you guys—they accuse Straight Edgers of being thugs.

ANDY MAUNCH They can accuse us of whatever they want. We’re not the ones going around getting drunk, starting fights with people.

JOE Like they say, Straight Edge is so violent. But I mean, here I am, pacifist. Clark, pacifist. Probably half the kids I hang out with are pacifists.

JOHN QUINONES (VO) Repeatedly they told us Straight Edgers don’t start fight. Other kids attack them because of their beliefs. And society, they say, either misunderstands or misrepresents them.

JOE I don’t see how people could label it as so wrong when it’s such a positive thing.

JOHN QUINONES (VO) In fact, Andy and his friends describe themselves as nothing less than Boy Scouts with rather impressive aspirations.

ANDY MAUNCH I want to go into law enforcement, eventually become an ATF agent.

JOHN QUINONES (on camera) You want to become a law enforcement officer?

ANDY MAUNCH Yeah. It’s always been what I’ve wanted to do since I was a little kid

JOHN QUINONES (VO) All of the Straight Edgers we met say they’re not gangsters or terrorists. They say they were not involved in any bombings or arsons. Andy, however, comes off like a soldier, a soldier of sobriety.

ANDY MAUNCH Survival of the fittest. If you’re strong, you’ll live.

JOHN QUINONES (on camera) And if you’re not?

ANDY MAUNCH You die.

JOHN QUINONES (VO) Just one week after our interview with Andy and his fellow Straight Edgers, there was another gang fight on the streets of downtown Salt Lake City. Police say about 30 suspected Straight Edgers and another group of kids exchanged words. Tempers flared, and a large brawl broke out. Bernardo Reprenza (ph), just 15 years old was beaten and stabbed to death. Among his assailants, say police, was Andy Maunch, who allegedly beat him unconscious with a baseball bat. The 18—year—old who dreamed of going into law enforcement is now charged with first—degree murder. He has pled not guilty.

ANDY MAUNCH You disrespect someone about being Straight Edge, about being whatever—I mean, if someone disrespects someone about their religion, I mean, that’s being disrespectful you, fight them. They die, that’s what they deserve.

HUGH DOWNS Andy Maunch is expected to go on trial for murder in July. Boy, zeal for anything can be a dangerous emotion.

BARBARA WALTERS When it goes that far. And we have just learned that local and federal authorities have put Straight Edge, along with other groups involved in domestic terrorism, on a list of people to watch closely during the 2002 Olympic games in Salt Lake City.

INTRODUCTION

By realizing it or not, punk subculture has long been in existence in Malaysia as early as in the 1970's. This coincided with the punk explosion itself that had happened in England (and not to exclude the one in the United State of America) during the same era. At first, it was only about music and everything else that came along with it. This includes the in-your-face attitude, rebellion, some post-hippie idealism and anti-society fashion statement.
When punk rock bands made their appearance in the UK and USA music scene, they had also been accepted here. Records of bands like the legendary Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Jam, The Buzzcocks, The Damned and The Police had continuously been played on every youngsters record player and stereo set. Tunes of the classics; Anarchy in the UK, God Save the Queen, White Riot, What Do I Get, New Rose and Message In A Bottle can never be forget as they had been sang with a new kind of spirit, alternatives to the other kind of static popular music of the 70's. Soul, disco, adult-oriented-rock (AOR); the kids just want to listen to something else. So, what Danny Kelly (1996) has stated is true, 'punk sprang fully formed from nothing more than the desire of youth for fast, engaging music and the sheer blinding inspiration of musicians'.
From the late 70's till the new millennium, punk has gone through a tremendous culture build-up. Many sorts of things have penetrated into the punk movement worldwide. The good things and the bad one too. Much arguments and conflicts have circulated in and out of the scene. Whether been resolved or still keep being debated, they have acted upon the punk society and the outside-society where they live.
So, the sole existence of punk cannot be discarded. Whether it accidentally happens or not, that is not really the case here. As what is important to notice is that it has formed a new subculture in the normal complex society. Like any other culture, punks have their own set of values, beliefs and customary behavior. It is important to study their way of thinking, way of living or just way of doing things. And not to forget also about their roles in the society and any conflicts that has arisen. As the study is being done in the context of Cultural Anthropology so it is not really about whats positive and whats negative. Just acceptation is what it all about. Our studies of concerns are in the context of Malaysia but still stick to the parallelism of punks all around the world especially the one in UK and USA where the whole shebang has started.
So it is important to set aside first all negative perception about this subculture as punk has been assumed to be associated more with the bad things by the mainstream publics. This is true especially when it comes to the moral matter. Most people have taken one-side judgments regarding to this. Punk has been concluded as a demoralizing culture and even sometimes it has turned out as a mere joke to be laugh at. Therefore it is important that this research is done. It is about to open the eyes of everyone about the real situation. What actually punk is all about? Is it just another case of social ill like the other infamous Bohsia and Bohjan, wild young Malay sex party and apostasy? The answers lie within the texts that follow later on.

HISTORY BACKGROUND OF PUNK IN MALAYSIA

In an on-air interview with WOWFM radio station, somewhere around August or September 2000, local punk guru and former The Sun columnist Joe Kidd opined that punk first came to Malaysia in 1978. It started in the East Coast states of Terengganu and Kelantan. It was getting big in 1980.
Joe Kidd, originated from Terengganu himself, is a well known in the local punk scene and the underground music arena as a whole. Now, in his mid-thirties, he is a member of a seminally important and quite legendary punk rock band, Carburetor Dung. He is also in the side project band, The Shitworker and other bands, which, in his own words, come and go according to situations. The old punkster runs Alternative Garage Entertainment, one of the few active local underground labels. It has a couple of releases of bands such as the Japan-based grindcore band, Damage Digital and the UK melodic punk/hardcore band, Annalise besides Carburetor Dungs own record.
As a teenager during the nascent years of Malaysias punk scene, Joe Kidd was initially attracted to the fashion sported by such seminal icons as the Sex Pistols emblazoned across the English magazines his brother brought back from his west coast boarding school (Ismail, Z. Et al. 2000). It is also believed that the same kind of attraction had appealed to the other earliest punkers. Those punk images just couldnt be blinded off from their eyes.
There is another theory that links to the experiences of local kids that went to study in colleges and universities in UK and USA. By chances, they had observed the evolution of punk at the right place where it had all started. This is the exactly thing that had been experienced by Kamil Othman, ex-DJ of Time Highway Radios former Alternative Rock Show, in the 70's somewhere in England. It was so happened that he had attended the 1976's 100 Club Punk Festival in London. He remembered of seeing Siouxsie of Siouxsie and The Banshees at the gig. The sights; the dressings and the attitudes, of her and the other crowds were so amazingly shocking him and his fellow Malaysian students. 'We have never seen such things before', he told. But they didnt really bring this newly discovered culture baggage when they got back home. It is just another culture shock that they had been experiencing. Whether they had enjoyed it or not, one thing for sure Kamil had latter on contributed something to the local scene. But lets hold that for a while. What about the other Malaysians who also studied and lived for a while under the Union Jack or in the State? At least maybe a few numbers of them had brought something punky across the border no matter in term of punk idea or just its plain attitude. It might be the case as no real evidence to proof this.
There is clear evidence showing the influences of punk culture to Malaysian audience. In the 35th edition of ROTTW, the Malaysias first music magazine, its editor Raja Iskandar Bin Raja Halid has admitted about his brother involvement with punk. He said, his brother has become a Mat Punk in the 70's while still in the 16-17 years of age. His teenage attitude is clearly a punk and he lived with it. But one thing that is astoundingly to notice is about his success in getting a university degree later on in his life. At the moment he is working somewhere in New Zealand (Raja Halid, R.I., 1999). This story somehow has become quite an inspiration to some readers of the magazine by acknowledging few replies to the editorial that followed the later edition of the magazine.
The story shows that a punk devotee can become useful too and acts as a source of inspiration to other people especially the punk wannabe.
Now lets get back to the 80's scene. The early 80's scene here however has never really transcended the trendiness of a small group of enthusiasts. Ex-punk rocker Flopster hazards a guess that only one in a thousand underground fans would have listened to punk rock back then (Ismail, Z. Et al. 2000). Furthermore, the scene went quiet by the mid-80's due to the rising popularity of thrash metal within the underground music scene, but punk never died.
Before the discussion goes further, it must be known that actually the mid-80's is more concern with the emergence of Malaysian underground music as a whole. This includes all the early Thrash/Death Metal and punk bands such as Rator (This legendary death metal band played in the vein of early Celtic Frost with dark lyrics), Blackfire, Punisher , Nemesis , Betrayer, Picagari, Mallaria, and Hijrah etc. The latter, an East Coast band is now popularly known as the Pilgrims. They were the first ever punk band to record a demo in 1990, called Pilgrimage to Nowhere and also the first one to release an album Perfume Garden in 1993. This album was pretty well received and played a part in kick-starting punk once again (Ismail, Z. Et al. 2000). Other band in the East Coast (Terengganu, to be precise) punk scene then was Mallaria, fronted by the influential Ku Yee. However the most other underground bands had split-up without leaving any musical legacy except for some badly recorded demo tapes. The most surprising and most memorable one is Evil Symphony a demo released by Rator (Mohamed Salleh, S. 1996). Lately the underground music scene has growing bigger while getting better and moving stronger than in the old days. It does not only involve punk bands but other themes like New School Hardcore, Modern Grunge, Metal, Indie, Electronica and Nu-Metal. Many new bands have come out of the closet and reveal themselves to the underground masses. Some have even made it to the overground and join the mainstream. But were not going really into detail on the whole underground thing, as we want to focus only on the sub-portion of it, the punk side. Still the interrelation of it must not be denied as they have inspired each other. The important thing is punk like most of other extreme music started from the underground scene.
It is nothing wrong to say that punk now has been evolving greatly. In the eyes of some people they have yet to notice it. For those who have been long enough in the scene and follow it thoroughly they can surely tell. This also true to the one whom has made deep observation to the scenario. They know whos who and what has happened and what is still going around.

WHO AND WHERE ARE THEY

These are two big questions arise from the scene outsiders who want to know more about them. Well, those punks can be as young as primary school kids and as old as 40 years old and above. But most of them are still in their teenagers and those below 40 . Many youngsters started to commit to punk culture when they have just finish with their schooling as they have gained new kind of freedom. With no more school they can do whatever they want. However, learning is still a process to go. This time in the shape of new culture the wild, exciting, young-angst rebellion of punk. Whether they further their study in colleges and university, got hold to a job or just loitering around wasting their parents money, it cant stop them from pledging alliances to the punk community.
Some who's lucky enough, even got to know about punk while still in elementary level of education. They by chance got the opportunity when their big brother brings them along to gigs. During the past few years till recently we can easily notice small kids with clean cute face and nice combed-hair within the vicinity of many underground gigs. And yes, they are sure looked punk enough in embarrassment of the other older attendees who are not quite punky.
Therefore punks can be just about anyone. High school students, undergraduates, sales persons, eatery place workers, engineers; these punks are everywhere. Punk must not be from big cities like Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Kuantan, Ipoh and Alor Setar, they can also originated from other ordinary places (and also remote areas and far-away villages) like Jelebu, Kangar, Teluk Intan, Trolak, Pasir Mas, Sg. Petani or even Labuan. They can always be seen in any underground gigs especially punk related shows. In Kuala Lumpur and its neighborhood Selangor, places like Damansara's Piccadilly Discotheque and The Pyramid Club, Life Center, etc. are classic places where underground punk gigs always being held. But that are in the past as most of these places have been closed down or not active in organizing underground gigs anymore. Newer places have taken over their roles. Today most gigs are been held at the Artist Club (ex-Carlos), the Actor Studio (more of a theater place actually), the new and grand MCities at KL Plaza, and other small pubs and discotheque around the city. Besides that punks are known to hang out and lepak at the Central Market (CM) , Pertama and Campbell Complex, Medan MARA food court and Kotaraya Complex in Kuala Lumpur.
Males are more into the punk culture than females. This can be understandable, as the punk culture itself doesn't deal with soft agendas but rather harsh, wild and aggressive belief, style and way of doing things. However the number of punk girls has increased. Some even to the extent have formed their own minor girl-riot (girl power?) movement. But still there are not many of them involve with any band and if they do usually as the singer and not any of the instruments players.

DEFINITION OF PUNK

If you went by the basic definition of punk in most English dictionary such as the one in the Collins Gem (1988), its meaning are inferior, rotten, worthless (person or thing) and petty (hoodlum). It is ironic somehow that the punk idol, John Lyndon the front-person of Sex Pistol, had been christened John Rotten, after his catchphrase, 'You're rotten, you are' by his band mate Steve Jones (Aizlewood, J. Et al. 1996). Are these the real meaning of punk in our context of discussion? In this same dictionary, the last definition of it is a style of rock music. But punk is not about music per se. Has this dictionary miss some other things that worth to be defined too?
According to Joe Kidd, his definition of punk has always been changing in accordance to his maturity. When he was a 13-year old kid deeply enthralled by pictures of Johnny Rotten and The Ramones, punk was a crude, shocking and revolutionary fashion parade with raw, unschooled and deeply honest (highly exciting!) music in tow (Kidd, J. 1999). Later on he recognized the spirit of change, independence, creativity and also the political side to it as he step further and started to venture out of the usual punk trappings and discovered other things that are punk as well. So his perception of punk has become widen. But basically he stressed out that:
Anybody or any group of people who sincerely push boundaries, create challenging bodies of work with integrity and thought, is considered by me as punk, especially when the expression positively reaffirms individual freedom and allows for the betterment of the world we live in. Thats my conclusion. Thats punk.
Through what he has stated above, that has been featured in a written interview column in a local punk fanzine, Callus (1999), punk can take a bigger definition than anyone can ever understand. Punk can go across the boundary of music. Punk takes part in other side of life too. In fact, punk helps to shape life itself. Punk is an alternative way of living that can change certain aspect of life of some individual or group of people if not for the whole society.
This is also coincided with what Weng had said in the same publication and also in his own newsletter Hickey on Your Brain #4. He is another punk activist who used to help running a Kuantans underground label called Dull Entertainment Programme. As for him, punk has always been about doing the right things and doing things right, being in conflict with the mainstream ideas/values that have been dictated to us to be followed blindly. Its about sticking up for our rights as a free and individual human being while being ethical at the same time using punk rationale and common sense. To him personally, its about taking control of our life. He has seriously stated that, Punk, you either get it or dont...its not just music and its not for everybody!

WAY OF LIVING

THE DO IT YOURSELF (DIY) ETHICS

The Do It Yourself or simply DIY ethics is an important component of local punk scene and in the globalize punk scene as well. It can be traced back as early as in the 70's. At first it hailed out through fashion. The guy who was responsible for this is non -other than Malcolm McLaren , a Fine Arts graduate and clothing retailer. This is the same person who helped to form Sex Pistol. He had introduced anti-fashion statements for the band members including bondage clothing, safety pins through the skin and short, spiked, dyed hair. Most of these new kind of fashion at that time were simple and easy to make. No wonder that the new fashion craze had been caught up by those young punk-wannabes in a short time. They just simply trashed out their already available apparel and turned it out as a new one. This was where creativity and innovative came in. Not to forget also the term anti-mainstream. And so against the mainstream it was that the whole society had looked upon it as something out of norm, novel and kind of nihilistic. But lets put aside about fashion and anti-mainstream for a while, as we will touch more on them in other sub-topic of discussion later on. Lets hear what the punk has to say about DIY.
As what (Ismail, Z. Et al. 2000) has put it, the most positive aspect of punks influence in the local underground during the 80's was probably the self-determining spirit of DIY. Weng thinks that DIY is basically a punk ideal about having control of what you do and taking control of your life in general by refusing to be a part of the mainstream business system and in our little underground world, releasing and distributing stuff on our own. What he means by having control in what we do is more related to things like doing our own records, spread our own ideas by making our own literature stuff and organize gigs or other shows and events by ourselves without or with less help from outsiders especially those business -minded person.
In Weng own experienced of releasing punk related stuff, he and his companies finance, record, produce and market the stuff on their own effort without relying on backings from corporations or record companies. Therefore through DIY way they have complete control on their releases especially the price part. They can keep the price fair and lower than those normal prices at shop. Usually the price of underground/punk DIY records is as low as RM3 and not exceeding RM10 for cassette releases, and for the compact disc format, it just a little higher than the cassette one. For example, DEP labels own third releases are Enslaved Chaos self-titled tape that is sold for RM6 and the price can be less than that. This price is possible, as elimination has been done to the hierarchy of a normal mainstream business system of middlemen and distributors and shops where at every step on the ladder of hierarchy, there is a definite price mark up (Weng, p40-42, 1999).
As Joe Kidd put it, DIY is a method used to circumvent the evils and pitfalls of commerce. This is true as punks nowadays are really against the idea of capitalism. DIY is anti-capitalism. So it is the solution to this problem. DIY gives producers of expression (bands, writer, artists etc.) total control over his/her ideas or products. Through DIY he/she will be able to be creatively free with his/her ideas and more importantly, to control the way his/her creations are being distributed to the masses.
This is in reaction to the normal (mostly and usually unfair) business practice of dictating bands, writer, artists or other creative people to dilute, tweak or tailor their products toward a certain standard (their standard) which will not only ensure their profitability but also make it appealing to the largest market possible. This kind of practice forces the creations/expressions to be safe, unchallenging, conservative and trapped inside established lines. In short, your band is going to be more than boring, youre fucked! (Kidd, 1999).
Joe Kidd has further on stated about the unfairness of the usual recording deal is one of the other reasons why the DIY ethics is important in the punk scene. As what we all generally know, normal business practices main concerned is making profit. And usually a huge chunk of the profit made is taken out of the bands, artists etc. share- meaning unfair division of the profit been made. This problem is still a major concern in the music industry worldwide and keeps being debated. But still someone will say that there is nothing wrong with it as it is a common thing in the music industry. The record company has the money and capital to invest for someones music product. Is it what capitalism all about? Again, as it is about unfairness, that is why punks are against it and they resolve the problem through DIY.
This battle between DIY and capitalism of ordinary business can be clearly seen through a real example. Usually many underground and alternative bands that signed with VSP are given RM1 for each cassette sold. Lets say VSP sold the tape to the record shops at RM10 per cassette and the cost of producing one cassette is RM3. That means, VSP has made a clean profit of RM6 out of the whole shebang! The company gets RM6 and the band RM1. According to the punks, they do not get a fair share. But there is other way to handle this.
If a band decides to record, produce and duplicate their products on its own (DIY) and give the distribution rights to VSP meaning the band gives VSP finished product (tapes all sealed up and ready for sale) VSP will usually give the band RM5 per copy of ready-made cassette. VSP then sells it to the record shops at the price of RM10, thus making a clean profit of RM5. The band then has to pay for duplication, covers etc. which cost, lets say RM2 each. This means that the band has made a profit of RM3 per cassette.
This is way better than signing to VSP and getting RM1. The band is able to control its creativity and gets a fairer deal for their toil, but the band still cant control the price at the shops. Usually shops sell the tape at around RM13, making a profit of RM3. This doesnt mean that the band is less DIY, they still did it all on their own, they stuck to their principle but they lose out on how much the product is going to be sold for at the end of the process.
So, the best way to deal with it is to go at it totally DIY right from the point of writing the songs to the other end of the line where a consumer is holding and enjoying the bands product. This where local punk band such as The Bollocks has been admired and hailed as hero. They have been selling their tapes at RM3 by hand and RM4 by mail or DEP who sells their tapes at low price such as RM5. By working with DIY distros , they cut out on the involvement of middlemen; the culprits who make the products become expensive.
But this doesnt ensure how the product is going to be sold at the end of the line anyway. It has been a big issue recently in the underground circle where the piratisation also came in. The Bollocks own recording has been wickedly pirated and been sold as high as RM9 in the shops. The same kind of thing also happens to another band, ACAB. These things happen, albeit in a smaller scale than that VSP/DIY band example.
Still Joe Kidd has another way in handling this kind of situation. He suggested:
I think the best way to go about it is to have your products distributed by both DIY distros and normal distributors. The area covered by distros such as ASAS, DEP and such is mainly in and around the scene. People in the scene will find it relatively easy to obtain the products but what about those who dont go through the gigs or read zines or order stuff through the mail? Are they automatically excluded here?
Furthermore, With that in mind, we must make these DIY recordings or products widely available or at least widely known, but we must do it in such away that doesnt compromise too much of the control we have over it. Thats where the method used by Dischord Records and so many other respectable/reliable labels comes in.
However, by selling punk stuff cheap and in the ethics of DIY, it doesnt mean that the quality has to be sacrificed. Weng thought that the best way is to release something as good as we can within our own budget. However Weng still strictly stressed on quality product:
All people who play in bands want their releases to be of good sound quality. But can we afford it? Releasing something is always better than nothing but we must try not to get people to equate DIY releases with poor quality so that DIY releases will earn their much-needed credibility even comparable to mainstream prices but of cheaper price. In this case, the message (of punk/hardcore) will truly get across. People will see through it by making comparison of the prices and everything will be more crystal clear.

PUNK AND ITS LITERATURE

Punk as a subculture for the chosen young generation also lives on with its own kind of books and writings. As punk is about making statement, therefore the existence of literatures is important in this subculture. Punks literatures, usually in the form of fanzine and newsletter act as a media to deliver ideas and messages about things in and out of the scene. It works as a tool to spread the ethics by providing information and discussing the philosophy of punk culture.
The existence of these literatures came along with the arrival of the punk culture itself especially in the late 80's and early 90's. One of the first ever punk fanzine is Aedes. It was written and self-published by the punk guru itself Joe Kidd, back in the early 1987 till 1994. Aedes had also brought itself the effort to documented music by early underground bands through 1994 self-produced compilation tape featuring many influential underground bands. Another worthy to be mentioning fanzine is Vortex From The East. This is a bilingual (English/Malay) fanzine done by an old-timer in the underground scene, known as Ajizz. Vortex From The East is also the longest running fanzine in Malaysia. However this zine is more involved with the whole activity of the underground scene and not focusing solely on the punk agenda. It is a multi-genre style zine but mainly covers the metal side.
Till today there are too many zines that have been written by many individuals or party of people from various corners of Malaysia. This also surprisingly includes those that are from remote places and never-been-heard villages. The scenario shows that punk-related ideologies have penetrated deep into the heart of many persons throughout the country. It is easier actually to track down the spread of punk culture to local young individuals through the existence of zines. Kluang, Clang, Mentakab, Taiping, Tronoh, Kuala Pilah, Kemaman, you name it, punk has arrived to just anywhere and everywhere. Not forgetting also those universities like USM, UM, UTM, UKM, UPM etc. Somehow without we ever realized it, our next neighbor had spread his/her written messages to all around the world through his/her own copies of zine.
Actually, there are two forms of literature that dominants in our country. They are fanzine or zine and newsletter. Fanzine has more pages compare to newsletter. It can be less than 20 pages or as many as nearly 100 pages or more. While newsletter usually has 1 to a little more than 10 pages. They can be in various format of presentation. In term of size, most of them are either in full-size or half-size of A4 paper format. They can be amateurishly photocopied or professionally offset-printed. The Raincity fanzine from Taiping, Perak is the first Malaysian zine in newsprint paper. And what is more impressive about it is that it has been done by a group of young punk kids who are still in their teens and had just finished school. This same format has later on been followed by another new zine, Callus. It is more of collective sort of effort as it involves various people in the scene. These people form Callus Collective and base in Batu Caves, Selangor.
Other publications include Embrace (Kluang), Pangcore (Skudai), Chaos PS (USM, Minden), Broken Foundation (UKM, Bangi), Ganyang Resistance (Parit), Cronically Donut (JB), Buddy Holly (Kuching), Solidaritas (Tronoh) and Periodical Dissonant (PJ). As for newsletter, there are Network and Subnetwork (KL), Quandary (KL), Voice From The Mind, In The Name Of Love and another Joe Kidds own personal side-project, the highly-irregular newsletter cum statement, Communion. There are many other zines and newsletters that have made their existence to the scene that are not mentioned here. Some of them have been published till a number of editions and then vanished. Some have managed to carry on with their work and still active till today. Theyre usually the high-spirited one and consider punk culture as basis for something they fight for.
What about the standard and quality of all these fanzines and newsletters? As all of them are done amateurishly and DIY, we can expect the worse and still be amaze at the same time. The quality can vary. Some of them are badly published and not even nice to look at. With all that sad written sentences, bad English and even to the extent of adding everythings up rojak style. Nevertheless there are still that have been done with an excellent performance of writings and at a standard command of language. These include Wengs Hickey On Your Brain and Joe Kidds own Communion. However it all depends on the standard of education that has been gone through and how it is being practiced. But above all, the things that must be stressed out are the message and the information regarding the scene and everything that surrounds it. In simple words, it is not for syok sendiri. It is just not for the sake of fun of doing it. It is for other people to enjoy and at the same time get the message and knowledge attached to the literature. These literatures are for other people in the scene and outside the scene to know better about punk culture and the real thing that is going on around the world.

PUNKS CODE OF FASHION AND STYLE

We have touched a little bit on the punk theme of fashion before under other topics. Here is the more detail of it. Punk is discovered by many young people in this country through fashion alongside the music itself. So it can be said that punk is very much easier to notice through fashion. If we stroll off along the street in the busy city for our usual hang out or shopping treat, by chance of luck we can easily happen to come across the punks. The first thing that strokes our eyes is their appearance. And sure enough they're somehow different from the normal people. Most of us then will keep our eyebrow high and act with disguise towards them. This is the common thing that happens in Malaysia.
We must not forget the role that has been played by one of the punk creator, Malcolm McLaren. He is an important person because he had helped to create the punk culture at the first place through fashion. When he introduced the ever-popular anti-fashion statements for the Sex Pistols, the bands followers in the UK and all around the world have also caught the same phenomenon. The same situation is also applied to the Malaysian punk audiences. They employ the same style of fashion. They also want to wear the bondage clothing and torn out T-shirt, jacket and jeans, insert safety pins through their skin and made their hair short, spiked and dyed. What made these kind of thing more interesting is the fact that it can be done DIY-ly without going to the hairdressing saloon or spend so much money on designer-label branded clothing items so punk now can be equate to affordable and inexpensive subculture. Other style and code of dress that are the in things are Mohawk hair, almost bold hair, Doc Martens boots, leather jacket, spikes, studs, body-piercing, propaganda T-shirts, Converse shoes and cargo pants. One thing that is quite fascinating to notice about punk fashion is actually they are not like any other kind of mainstream fashions. What does it mean here, it is not about following the latest trend. It does not wear out with time. It is still applicable through many generations and years the 70's, 80's, 90's and now the new millennium. What those Sex Pistols followers wore in the 70s, punksters now are still wearing it. And yet new things keep coming up and been added to the current style of dressing. Lately, dreadlocks hairstyle and the wearing of wallet-chains have becoming hot items.
It must be made clear that all punk styling that have been elucidated above applied to the punk rockers generally. As punk culture consists of many themes where they are associated with somehow different type of punk music, they also wear quite different style of dressings. The Anarchopunk wear black cargo pants, T-shirt with slogans or logos of bands, patches, khaki backpacks, dreadlocks or spiky hair. While the Hardcore kids are spotted with cargo pants, loose denims and T-shirts, wallet-chains and baseball caps among other things. As for the skinheads, they are synonym with bald or shaven heads, tight jeans rolled up above the ankle, suspenders, berets, denim and suede jacket, Fred Perry shirts and Doc Martens. The skinheads are more fashionable, smart-dressed and sometimes dont really show that harmful looks.

MUSIC AND THE MEDIA

Music is the important thing in punk culture as it is where it all started. Punk is rooted from Rock genre. Actually, punk music has not been created by the Sex Pistols as what many people have assumed. Punk sound has been derived from the music of garage bands of the late 60's with bands such as the artistic and experimental Velvet Underground, New York Dolls and the very acclaimed Iggy Pop and the Stooges. Their music has been termed as proto-punk. It means the early projected sound of punk before the real punk culture itself existed. So, musically punk came from the United States of America.
Then, in the early 70's, The Ramones from New York has made their appearance for the first time. This is an important band as it has introduced the simple 3-chord melodic music termed as bubblegum punk music. At this same period of time, UK was more associated with Glam-rock. It is a soft side of punk and its predecessor, Rock n Roll. It is popularly concern with man that wears make up and a little bit of woman clothing. The Glam-rock followers will try to dress as glamorously as possible hence where the term came about. The Glam-rock era has clearly been pictured in the film by Todd Haynes, Velvet Goldmine. The film who has been starred by Ewan McGregor among others, is a valentine to the sounds and images that erupted in and around London in the early 1970's: to Brian Ferry, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed and the extraordinary inversions they imposed on our notions of the performance, sexuality and identity. The film shows some of the elements that help to the emergence of punk later on.
But not until the mid-70's that punk has became a music genre of its own. In both major countries, the USA and UK, young and new bands had started to establish their own style of music and wanted to get away than the mainstream music wave like hard rock. They want to give priority to their own taste and passion of music.
In the UK, the Sex Pistols has been labeled as the first punk band. Even though the Sex Pistols and The Ramones have different agenda and sound, they have revolutionized music in their own country. The Ramones music is faster more to the bubblegum music as what has been said before. While the Sex Pistols play Faces riff boisterously with more rough sound and noisy.
In America, punk stay as an underground music movement, and they try to explore Hardcore music and indie-rock in the 80s. But in the UK, punk has become a major music trend. There, Sex Pistols has been pictured as a band that gave threat to the government and monarchy, but what for sure, this band has led way for other new bands to emerge. Some of the bands tried to imitate the Sex Pistols, but there were many others who had succeeded in establishing their own sound like Buzzcocks near-pop music, reggae and rock influenced of The Clash and experimental music of Joy Division.
Than punk music has been converged into sub-genres like post-punk (more experimental and artistic), new wave (more into pop music) and Hardcore who made punk music harder in sound with strong lyrics. Through the 80's decade, punk has active been played in the Hardcore music arena in the USA and UK. In the early 90's, new era punk bands, headed by Green Day and Rancid emerged from the underground music wave of America and get signed to the major label.
In Malaysia, punk music first gets through to the youngsters through records playing and on the stereo set. As the record and tapes of overseas punk acts are very rare and hard to find locally, those early punks always trade amongst them. They are lucky enough if they are in the same school and have the same taste in punk music. But, that is not always the case. For Joe Kidd, he remembers in the old days where he had a strong continuously friendship with his pen pal, Abazz of Taipings Karatz:
Me and Abazz were writing to each other back in 1979! Fucking 20 years ago! He was living in Penang then and we always traded tapes, pictures, cuttings and zines. When he moved to Kuantan in the early 80s we always hangout with each other as I was studying there. And when he went to Taiping in 1985/86 I visited him once, hanging out at his house and watching Suburbia and Ruth! A Music War videos (Zahid, 1999).
So, during those early pears, there was no band, they were just trading the noise among them (Bollok Wok cover notes, 2000). Joe Kidd says, Punk rock was a worldwide phenomenon back then. For a bunch of kids living in Terengganu, it was like being touched by the hand of enlightenment (Ismail, Z. Et al. 2000). In the same interview in TONE magazine, he had added, Musically, it was raw, fast, quirky, intelligent and by far a lot more potent, dangerous and alive than the whole content of all TONE magazines combined.
During the era of rising popularity of the underground scene in the mid-80's, most of the punk bands that existed at that time play quite the same kind of punk rock music. Many of the tunes have energy and strength that replicate the one of the Sex Pistols. As passion for the music is above everything, musical talent is not something that is very important. As long as you knew three chords, you were a guitarist. Talent was optional ((Ismail, Z. Et al. 2000). But they keep on improving themselves with frequent jamming sessions and started to perform in small underground gigs. It was fun no fights, no animosity; just a bunch of kids having a lot of fun thrashing out their own brand of music, reminisced Joe Kidd in his column Blasting Concept in The Sun (October 1994).
Therefore, the first sub-genre of punk music that has been played by local punk band is Punk Rock (sometimes it is spelled Rawk) itself. Besides the legendary Carburetor Dung, Hijrah and The Pilgrims other bands that play this kind of music are The Splatters, Karatz, DEP, Tayar Soton, The Bollocks, etc. They play fast and straight-ahead version of 3-chord music. Sometime, the tunes are catchy and melodic. They employ meaningful and no metaphor lyrics to their songs. The song can be about almost anything; abortion, politics, friendships, racism, sexism, having fun, environmental issues and the list goes on.
Their influences include western bands like the Sex Pistols (always the numero uno of any punk related list of preferences), The Ramones, Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion, NOFX, The Damned, The Clash and The Adverts. Even the 90's grunge-superhero, Seattles Nirvana, has been credited for bringing the sound and spirits of late 70's punk rock to the mainstream pop audience. Smells Like Teen Spirit has become the anthem for young people alienated by baby boomers Michael Jackson and Madonna. The band consisted of three hippies and punk rockers wannabe fronted by the late Kurt Cobain who committed suicide in 1994, Dave Grohl (who now the front person of Foo Fighters) and Chris Novoselic (who later formed Sweet 75 after Nirvana was disbanded).
There are also bands that play a simpler, sing-along kind of punk tunes. Most of the tracks they play and record are catchy and easy to remember. Their style of music is termed as street music as it is popular to the kids that always hang out on the street. The music is also kind of popish, hence the term pop punk also applied. If the band members hail and very much involve with skateboard activities, they can be known as skate punk. Musically, their hero is more of The Ramones other than the Sex Pistols. Not forgetting also the more recent bands especially the Americans act like Green Day, No Doubt, and Blink 182. They are of more from the mainstream arena and being signed to the major labels. But still the music has meaningful lyrics of varied subjects. The most important local punk band that is well known with this style of punk music is the legendary Subculture. The band is still active till today even though they have successfully been employed to other real and permanent job. But the band has not be getting very much support from the local undergrounders lately due to their involvement with the more mainstream crowd. Their songs also always being played on the local radio station as the songs are radio-friendly enough to penetrate the ears of major listeners. Other local bands in this category, which are worth to notice, are Head cleaner and H.A.S from Ipoh and the going-to-be-big Spunky Funggy from Kuala Lumpur.
Then, there are bands that instead of keeping true to traditional 3-chord punk search within contemporary and historical references, from pre-punk band Velvet Underground to Can and Beefheart (Ismail, Z. Et al. 2000). Those bands such as The Pilgrims, Naked Butterfly, and Shitworkers (Joe Kidds indie-punk side project) are attached to Post-punk. It is the 90s punk revivalism with a heavier, more metal-like sound than the original punk. The three bands mention are seasoned punk rockers and not new to the scene. They try to create challenging cerebral music; experimental, bleak, abrasive and serious at the same time.
The very good example is The Pilgrims. Earlier it has been explained that this band plays punk rock just like Carburetor Dung and the Splatters. Before they change their name to The Pilgrims due to the breaking up of Hijrah they have been playing Sex Pistols-fueled music. Then when they signed to Pony canyon, a major label who keens to engage local rock acts, The Pilgrims has been known as a humor punk-combo who play variety of punk rock music, from the usual sing-along tunes to the fast hardcore songs and also some surf numbers courtesy of their surf-crazy guitarist, Combat. When they started to perform Hindustani cover song they have become much more popular even though this was not intended. In an interview with R.O.T.T.W (Seir and Herman, 1998), they had expressed the feeling of sorry for including Churaliya/Deko Abto in the Pony Canyons 1996 Da Capo album as it has made the album sold like hot chocolate.
From the word Da Capo itself shows how The Pilgrims started wanting to change their music direction. That particular album signifies how the band wants to start something new and fresh due to the splitting of its original group members. The coming in of its new front man, Bob has given new light and shed new ideas to the band. The Post-punk sound becomes stronger in their next albums like The Wiser Fisherman and the latest one Achtung! This is not a metal album!. The later has been criticized by many due to its complete near-metal sound and losing its punk touch. But the band doesnt really care about that and believe in what they are doing.
The next punk theme is Hardcore (HC). This type of music is a derivation of earlier punk music. It has been made popular by the early or old school western punk bands such as Minor Threat, Youth Of Today, Rollins Band, Black Flag, Sick Of It All and Warzone. Hardcore music is harder and more extreme than punk rock. The elements of hard rock and metal have been added to make the music more aggressive. The lyrics are very important in accordance with its hardcore sound. They must deliver strong and meaningful messages.
The term old school is referring to the early bands they have their own sound in distinction with the new school'. Some of the old school bands are the legendary Chronic Mass, Basic Right, Disaster Funhouse, N.E.T (Never Ending Threat) and 24 Reasons. However only Disaster Funhouse has the real old school sound resembling those of Minor Threat and such. The others represent variety of Hardcore sub-genres such as raging and brutal HC, progressive-experimental HC, rapcore, Doom HC etc. As for the new school bands they are Tabaraka, Standstill, Self Defense, Kharisma, Carbon 13 and FSF among others.
Skinhead punks music is Oi! And Ska. Oi! Is like crowd-friendly sing-along punk tunes. There is also the more extreme Strength-thru Oi! with more aggressive and sometime harsh style of singing. Oi! Influences come from Sham 69, Anti-pasti, Oi Polloi, Cockney Rejects, UK Subs, Last Resort, The Oppressed, etc. Ska is slower with similarities to reggae. In fact, it is believed that ska came first before the appearance of reggae. Some of the ska heroes are Madness, Bad Manner, and The Special. As for the local acts, there are ACAB (All Capitalists Are Bastards), Oppression, The Official, The Maniacs, Boot Off!, Skin-Rovers, Drinking Squad, The Opponent, Crewkutz and Individuous.
Anarchopunk has gained much attention recently. It is punk that adapted to anarchism, which derived from Greek word an archos, meaning no government. The sound is exactly like punk but the difference is in the political and social themes in the lyrics. Anarchists like Crass, Conflict, Dis-bands, and Flux of Pink Indians have influenced local anarchopunks such as Mass Separation, Parkinson and Aghast. Many of the anarchopunk bands have thrash music elements embroidered in their tracks so it makes it hard for the casual listener to grasp what they are singing (or screaming?) about. That is why the usual supplement of lyrics sheet is important to understand the messages of the songs.
The involvement of mass media even though not thoroughly, has in one way help to promote and introduce punk music and the culture to the masses. But it is not in the form of daily playing of songs on the radio or spinning of video clips on television musical programme like any other pop stars. It is more in the form of special radio show or television programme that dedicates to rock and alternative music acts.
On Time Highway Radio (THR), there is one radio show called Alternative Rock Show hosted by the superpower DJ Kamil Othman. The show has premiered the show somewhere in the mid-90's and has been terminated few months ago. Since it first started, it has gathered much cult and faith followers who will wait patiently for the show to be aired at 10.00 p.m every Saturday night. The show only plays and introduces rock related music and other alternative kind of songs not usually air on radio. DJ Kamil Othman has dedicated himself to bring in many local underground music to the music and introduce many segments that committed to certain genre of music like metal, electronica, Malay rock, experimental music and certainly punk music itself. Usually he will start with the classic tunes and later on will be followed by newer acts with international and local bands. He will also explain certain information like the history of the music and relate it to other materials. Sometime he held some interview and discussion sessions with local personalities like underground bands, musician and music expertise, not to exclude Joe Kidd himself . DJ Kamil Othman has become an important informants about the local scene and very much respected from the crowd .
On television there is once a programme called Alternatif . It was produced by TV3 and featured international and local so-called alternative music. This 30-minutes weekly programme first been aired around 1995. The show has taken advantages of the local underground scene by introducing acts like Carburetor Dung , The Pilgrims, Subculture, Spiral Kinetic Circus, OAG (Old Automatic Garbage), The Beads and Apple Greens among others. It was first been hosted by Lee of the Carburetor Dungs fame and later on, who else Joe Kidd. The show has also introduced another host, Reza of Saturnine during its last seasons.

WAYS OF THINKING

CODES OF ETHICS

Like any other subculture, punk has its own specific codes of ethics. They are usually derived and extracted from various ideals, politics and ethics currently in vogue in the Western scene. The acceptance of punk ethics is varied, either the music first than come the ethics or vice versa. As for Shahrail of the band Nitty Gritty (early Kuantan underground band), I started by listening to underground music, then came the ideas. I was hooked by the energy and I always felt that we (myself and punk rock) had this mutual affection (Ismail, Z. Et al.).
In discussing about these ethics, in the same publication, Ismail, Z. Et al. continue to emphasize that; These are usually picked up from lyric sheets of bands or opinions in DIY bedroom fanzines, an essential medium of communication within the underground network. It has been explained before that most punk songs have meaningful and full-of-message lyrics even though sometime it is hard to understand what the songs all about (the inclusion of lyrics sheet is very much important in that case). The songs and lyrics signify what they are believed in and fight for. Many of them really serious with their ethics like what they're singing and writing about. They will practice what they preach. They will defend their belief in any debate and ready to argue about it anytime and anywhere. However there are few guys who dont commit to their ideal culture. Their actual behaviors are not in accordance with what they say they fight for.
Nevertheless, the most positive aspect of punks influence in the local underground during the 80s and still applied till today was probably the self-determining spirit of DIY. Punk activists like Joe Kidd and Weng will never give up on the idea of DIY. It can be seen through what they do in everyday life like what have been explained under Way Of Living topic. The quite lengthy sub-topic of DIY can even goes forever, as there are still lots of articles on DIY ethics in local and overseas punk fanzines.

PUNK INTRINSIC IDEOLOGIES

The most popular ideology that has been subscribed by some local punk is Straight-edge with its famous acronym, SxE. It is more attractive and significant to the Hardcore kids. Straight-edge is about healthy living and positive lifestyle. That means they dont; smoke, take drugs, drink and practice free sex. Even though it sounds almost impossible by other people, some of the punk/hardcore devotees really practice it. But for sure no one is perfect. Some will play truant and not commit fully to the idea (especially on the smoking part!). Others will go back to practice their original lifestyle. The straight-edge way of living can also contribute to veganism, which is commitment to strict vegetarian. But the case is rare.
Lately, a quite new ideology has penetrated into the scene. The rather extreme Anarchism has made its way to our shore. Outside literature like APF Anarcho Punk Federations (USA) Counterculture has been distributed by local anarchists. They (local anarchopunks like Jimbo of Parkinson and Broken Noise Record)) are in the process of setting up anarchist group like ALF, ABC or ACF in Malaysian society. Like what has been has explained before under Music and Its Media anarchopunk worship anarchism, with the clue word itself anarchy, which derived from Greek word an archos, meaning no government (However, we dont go very detail with this issue, as it is still not fully understood by us). Anarchopunk is famous with their slogans like Ignorant Is Bliss and Awareness Is A Crime.
According to Weng, Anarchism has always been part of punk, maybe not as a whole but its the basis of the movement itself. Anarchism is an ideology and if you want to set up anarchist groups you got to truly believe 100% in the ideology itself in the first place and believe me, anarchism is not meant for everybody. He responded that way because many kids who say that they are into anarchism but in reality they are into it just for the sake of being cool and the word anarchy itself is quite fancy to them. As for Joe Kidd, anybody can be an anarchist but how true are they in that particular school of thought? Nowadays, its a fashionable thing to be anarcho, especially here. And that is really sad. Its funny too (Zahid, 1999).

CONCLUSION

To sum up everything, punk is a unique subculture that has been in existence in Malaysia since the punk explosion itself that had happened in England and the United State of America. It becomes more popular during 1980's and 1990's due to the emergence of local underground music scene. Like any other culture, punks have their own set of values, beliefs and customary behavior. Their way of thinking, way of living and other way of doing things have been studied in many range of subtopics. As a whole, it can be said that punk culture in this country is not only about music as it covers other aspects of life as well.
In doing this particular research we have applied what we have learned in class and also our non-formal learning through everyday life. Different and variety of methods of data collection and analysis have been used to satisfy our objectives. Some of the field techniques of ethnography have been applied. We are lucky enough as one of our group members has been following the underground scene for quite a long time. He is a faithful observer and has a close attachment with the local scene. But still he wants to be known as an insider and outsider at the same time. He has also been attending underground gigs since 1996. Many of the information attained are from his own account of experiences. Therefore direct, firsthand observation of casual punk behavior, including participant observation of punk activities has been utilized. Emic and Etic research strategies have been used to study this particular subculture. Most of the information that we have gathered are from personal articles been written by punk well-informed informants and also interview sessions with punk activists and band members that are featured in the underground punk DIY zines and newsletter.

The Red Rockers were from New Orleans.They formed in 1979 by a bunch of The Clash fans,and were originally called the Rat Flinks.

Original members were...
John Griffith "Stunn" - Vocals,Guitar,Keyboards
Darren Hill "Derwood" - Bass
Patrick Butler Jones "Drummur" - Drums,Percussion (1979 - 1983)
James Singletary "James Jett" - Lead Guitar
Jim Reilly - Drums (1983 - 1985)
Shawn Paddock - Guitar,Vocals (1983 - 1985)

As they began to take their music more seriously,the band changed their name to the Red Rockers,based on "Red Rockers Rule",a B-side of a punk single by the Dils.

They were NOT communist,but were very leftlist and inspired by The Clash so much so,that they covered a few Clash songs in their set.

They released their debut single "Guns And Revolution" on Vinyl Solution Records the same year and appeard on the "No Question,No Answers" comp doing the songs "Dead Heroes" and "Red Star".

In 1981,the band relocated to San Francisco and signed to fledgling label 415 Records Label,were released the LP Condition Red.Interestingly,Jello Biafra sings background vocals on the band's cover of Johny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues.That cover helped the Red Rockers achieve punk "immortality",by making them the first punk band to cover a Johny Cash song (a full 9 years before Social Distortion made it cool to like Johny Cash)

In 1983,Jim Reilly joined Red Rockers,replacing Patrick Butler Jones behind the drums.Reilly had formerly drummed for irish punk band Stiff Little Fingers,have left them in 1981.

And thats about it for the Red Rockers "punk phase"

They eventually moved to Los Angeles,signed with Columbia Records,and went on to score a minor hit with "china",including a video (shot by former members of New Orleans proto-punk group SexDog) that aired on MTV.

In 1985,Red Rockers became the opening band for U2 on their UNFORGETTABLE FIRE tour,but then Lone Justice replaced them as the opening act.

Around this time,members of Black Flag took Red Rockers out behind SST headquarters and shot them all in the head.
